Infant Car Seats for Safety

Depending on your age, you might be able to remember back to the days of riding on your mother's lap or the backseat of the car when the family went out for a drive. The problem with this scenario is of course safety; in the event of a car accident, many children were seriously injured or killed because they were not in a car seat.

In the early 1900's, car seats were available but they were built more for holding a child in their seat, rather than protecting them in a car accident. As time went on, governments started to the see the safety benefits of making infant car seats mandatory. Bills were signed into law in many states throughout the United States as well as countries all over the world and by the 1980's it was usually mandatory for a child to use a car seat.

Depending on the size of the child, different car seats are available, all with different options. One common theme today is that car seats that are sold in major stores have to be approved by the Government to ensure their safety.

Over the years as design and technology progressed, infant car seats have become more innovative. One such innovation is the advent of convertible car seats. Because children grow and their needs for car seats change, manufacturers have responded. Convertible car seats are ones that progress with the child and convert from a seat for a baby, into one for a toddler. For parents on a strict budget, this is very helpful since a new car seat does not have to be purchased for each stage of a child's development.

Another innovative design is in what are called "travel systems". These are car seats that can easily be attached to a stroller. They're so easy to use and the baby does not even have to be removed from the infant car seat in order to use the stroller. The car seat simply snaps out of the base that it sits on in the back seat of the car, and quickly snaps onto the stroller with little to no effort.

Over the years, infant car seats have prevented many injuries and deaths by ensuring that a child stays securely in the car in an accident. Unfortunately not all accidents involving children turn out well, but you can take steps to drastically decrease the chance of harm. Reading the owners manual and instructions of the car seat that you purchase is the first step. Ensuring that the seat is installed properly is very important. You may be able to contact your local police department or a car dealership for more details on how to properly install a car seat. Another important tip to keep in mind is that if the car seat has any damage at all, it should be replaced as the structural integrity may be compromised.

An infant car seat is the single most important piece of safety equipment that you may ever buy for you child. Ensure that you buy a good quality car seat, but at the same time, remember that you don't need to spend a fortune for your child to be safe.
